Jeff Little

Jeff Little has a singular passion when it comes to fishing - smallmouth bass.  That's not to say he doesn’t’ appreciate other species such as largemouth, striper, catfish, muskie and walleye. There is a persistent preoccupation that spills over into every part of his life, and it is the complexities of this brown river denizen.

Jeff is the author of In Pursuit of Trophy Smallmouth Bass: My Life in a Kayak. Jeff regularly contibutes articles and photographs to publications and websites throughout the industry. He has served as president of the Potomac River Smallmouth Club and earned his ACA certification to teach basic river kayak. His Pro Staff affiliations include St. Croix Rods, Hawghead Marine & Tackle, Adventure Technology Paddles, Palm Paddling Gear, and Kayakbassfishing.com

When asked why he loves kayak fishing, he explained, "Well that's a heavy question. One of the residents at the nursing home I work at came as close as anyone can to explaining it.  She spoke of her late husband, an avid angler, and said with a shrug, 'I guess that when you're fishing, you just can't worry.'  Why I do it from a kayak?  Because it goes where a larger boat can't, doesn't require warranty work or maintenance, starts up perfectly every time, and keeps me healthy, mentally and physically."

Nickname/Alter Ego: Yakfish

State/Hometown:
New Windsor, Maryland

Favorite Wilderness Systems Kayak: Ride 135

Must-Have Accessory or Gear: An irrigation syringe filled with my own concoction of amino acids so I can scent my lures.

Favorite Place to Fish: It changes, but I've been on a Susquehanna River kick recently.

Favorite Rod 'n Reel: A spinning rod I built on a St. Croix Legend Tournament blank.  It's 7'5" long, medium power, fast action, and can throw a tube or fluke longer than I can gather line to set the hook.  I put a Daiwa Sol 2500 reel on it.

Favorite Bait/Lure: My own hand poured soft plastic creations.  Recently, I've done well with a beaver style bait that I nose hook with a #6 octopus hook, and keel weight with lead discs so it goes down belly first.
