Wilderness Systems Expands Tsunami Line
2006-05-26
Same great paddling experience, but in a smaller or larger package
Easley, SC July, 2005 - Many people have entered the sport of paddling in the last several years through the purchase of recreational kayaks like the Wilderness Systems Pungo™. With their paddling skills improving, and their love of the sport taking hold, many of these recreational paddlers have looked to a new boat that offers the stability of a recreational kayak, but with improved speed and storage. Last year Wilderness Systems introduced the Tsunami™ 140 and 145, which from the response at retail, hit right on the mark for these paddlers. For the 2006 paddling season Wilderness Systems is introducing the Tsunami in 12, 12.5, 16, and 16.5 foot models.
“We’ve been very impressed by the response of the Tsunami 140 and 145 and it seemed natural for the line to be expanded,” said Kelley Woolsey, Confluence EVP Marketing and Sales.
The Tsunami 120 and 125 were designed for day and over night trips, while the 160 and 165 with greater storage capacity is designed for extended trips. In the development of the shorter Tsunami 120 and 125 and the longer Tsunami 160 and 165, Bob McDonough, Confluence VP of Research and Development, worked to keep the speed of the boats very similar at cruising speeds.
“Even though the boats vary in length, their cruising speed is very similar for each boat,” added McDonough. “Even when paddling at cruising speed next to our Tempest performance sea kayak, the Tsunamis keep pace.”
The Tsunami 120 and 125 will each feature Phase3 outfitting and will be offered in multiple materials including Gen2™ polyethylene, Duralite™ polyethylene, and composites and will be available in the Fall of 2005. Manufacturer suggested retail prices:
Tsunami 120
Gen2™ - $800,
Duralite™ - $1,000
Composite - TBD
Tsunami 125
Gen2™ - $850
Duralite™ - $1,050
Composite - TBD
The Tsunami 160 and 165 will be available in Spring 2006 with models available in the same materials as the 120 and 125. Manufacturer Suggested Retail Prices are to be determined.
For every Tsunami sold a portion of the profits will go to AmeriCares®, earmarked to help the survivors of the 2004 Tsunami rebuild their lives.
The Tsunami Commitment- It has been our custom at Wilderness Systems to select boat names that show our respect for water- its beauty, its diversity, its power. Often, the name helps define the boat’s strengths and character: we introduced the Tsunami in fall 2004 with the same intent. But December 26, 2004 changed that. It is only fitting that this boat, the Tsunami, acknowledge not the awesome force of nature, but should more rightly honor the hundreds of thousands of victims in South Asia and Africa who lost their lives, their homes, their loved ones to its devastating power.
