Wilderness Systems and Joel McBride with Kayak Fishing- The Ultimate Guide
From author: Joel McBride
This book and DVD project evolved through a combination of a few things. Up until a couple of years ago, my background in paddle sports had been solely in whitewater. Through a merger of all the brands in the Confluence family I became exposed to all facets and categories in paddle sports. In 2001, I became the rep for all Confluence brands in the gulf coast, just at the time when kayak fishing was really taking off. I had the opportunity to be involved in tournaments and work with tackle shops like Fishing Tackle Unlimited in Houston. Never one to pass up a chance to get out on the water, we went kayak fishing with some of the most well known anglers in the gulf. We met up with Dean Thomas of Slowride Guide Services in Aransas Pass, TX. I always loved paddling but that along with catching big red fish and I was…….hooked. Yes, pun intended. In the summer of 2005 at the outdoor retailer show in Salt City, my friend Ken Whiting, owner of Heliconia Press and author/publisher of several paddling books himself, asked me what was going on out there in the paddle sports industry. What was new and happening? I started telling him about kayak fishing and he suggested we work together on a project. By that time Wilderness System’s boat sales had grown substantially, much of it due to the Tarpon series. That boat has lead the charge and set the new standard for fishing from kayaks. Then we added Scott Null as our rep in the Gulf States. Scott had been a true to the core life long fisherman, and guide as well. With the combination of a lifelong paddler (me) who was a bit new to kayak fishing but am a life long fisherman we felt we could mix the experiences at hand into a comprehensive guide to kayak fishing.
This book and DVD, created in concert with each other, were designed to map out everything you need to know about kayak fishing. From getting started with the basics, on to rigging your boat, paddling techniques and most importantly safety. It is such a safe sport but you want to learn the proper approach and get into it properly. This project was designed to have something for everyone. If you are an expert angler looking to try a new way to stalk your prey, it’s in there. Not only that it walks you through the initial steps of rigging your boat, how to paddle most efficiently, and most important, landing that fish and enjoying your time out on the water. If you are a paddler like me looking for new ways to enjoy your time out on the water, this DVD will show you how to use your skills to start landing fish from your kayak. It’s such a fun thing to do. Everyone needs to be out on the water kayaking fishing. Good exercise, great time recreating, spend quality time with the whole family, and enjoy some time away. Plus you catch some big fish!
